(AsiaGameHub) –   Australia’s Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has mandated Entain to undertake a legally enforceable remediation plan, following discoveries that its Ladbrokes and Neds brands breached national self-exclusion rules on over 500 instances.

What Did ACMA’s Investigation Find?

The investigation concluded that Entain’s systems failed to consistently detect and connect accounts held by people who had signed up for self-exclusion. Consequently, some accounts remained operational despite the customers being enrolled on BetStop, the National Self-Exclusion Register. In a specific case, a self-excluded gambler was able to continue placing bets for more than a year because an existing account was not linked to their exclusion record.

The regulator also found that Entain allowed self-excluded people to register new accounts, contravening the regulations. These rules mandate that once a person is listed on BetStop, all licensed betting providers in Australia must block them from opening any new accounts.

Regarding the register, ACMA discovered that some individuals who had signed up to BetStop could still create new betting accounts after self-excluding. Shortcomings in Entain’s account setup and verification procedures meant discrepancies in customer information, like names and email addresses, were not always identified by its systems. Additionally, the probe found Entain did not sufficiently advertise BetStop in its customer correspondence, such as emails and SMS, as legally required.

Entain is not the sole target of ACMA’s recent regulatory actions. For instance, just last month, the Authority initiated probes into streamers and influencers believed to be advertising illicit gambling sites and operators.

What Happens Next?

As a result of the findings, Entain has agreed to an 18-month, court-enforceable remediation program. This undertaking obliges the company to fund an independent audit of its compliance frameworks and implement all necessary upgrades recommended by the review.

ACMA stated that while it did not issue a formal infringement notice, failure to adhere to the undertaking may lead to financial penalties ordered by a court. Entain has pledged to enhance its identity verification and account-matching technologies, as well as introduce additional manual checks when possible matches are detected.

ACMA member Carolyn Lidgerwood emphasized the gravity of the failures, noting that people who choose to self-exclude must be stopped from opening fresh accounts with any licensed wagering provider in Australia. The incident also underscores the persistent difficulties operators encounter in upholding robust safeguards for self-excluded patrons.

In separate Entain news, the gambling group recently declared that Eminence Capital founder Ricky Sandler has resigned from his position as a non-executive director following the conclusion of the company’s agreement with the investment firm.
